How to get here?

We got here by booking a tour through our Youth Hostel. There are no public transport options, so this seems like the only option. At our hostel we paid 50 yuan for a retour trip with a mini-bus, this adds up to the entrance price for the temple.

What to do?

After the mini-bus drops you off at the parking lot, you have to walk to the ticket office. Here you can scan your ticket, or buy one if needed. After the ticket office there are buses waiting which you can use to go to the temples. The first stop will be after 30 seconds, but if you stay in the bus, it will drive you to the main temple of the complex. On the way back I would recommend visiting the temple near the entrance. The main temple is built inside a cave, and consists of multiple chambers where you can see statues and wall paintings. You can also go up through small stairs and chambers, but if it’s busy this can get cramped. On the way back you can leave the bus at the first temple, near the entrance. You can walk through the temples, and see the “hanging” temples built into the cliff wall. After that, you can walk back to the ticket office, since it’s only a few minutes walking.

Weather and clothing

We were at the temple on the first of May, and we had snow with 0 degrees celsius. The host at our hostel warned us of very cold weather, even though the weather in the city was hot. If you are in doubt you should ask your hostel or hotel for recommendations for the weather, because it can be different from the city. Normal shoes are fine, you won’t have to do a lot of hiking or walking.

Additional information

If you make a reservation through your hotel/hostel, they will need you passport. It's recommended to still bring your passport with you, since it's mandatory to carry it with you in China.
