See Orangutans in the wild at Kutai National Park

Orangutans in the trees

How to get here

We couldn’t find a lot of information about Kalimantan, so we decided to go with a guide for multiple days. With these guides we went to Kutai National Park, and later on a Mahakam River Boat tour. I don’t know if it’s possible to go here on your own, but my advice will be to look around for guided tours online, and find one that you like, and that you can afford.

I know that this isn’t the most useful information, but hopefully this guide can steer you in the right direction, and inform you about what you can see and do during a tour in this area.

What to do

In Kutai National Park you can see Orangutans in the wild. Our guided tour brought us to an old Japanese research center in the jungle. To get here we first had to go from Balikpapan to Sangata, and the next day go to the river, and get on a small boat, which brought us to the research center. The research center is cared for by a ranger and his wife.

This research center has been used by the Japanese to study the Orangutans in the wild, since they left, they turned it into an accommodation for tourists. When we were staying here, around December, we were the only ones here.

The ranger will take you to do a jungle tour, to see the Orangutans, which is amazing. During the night, we did another jungle tour, and saw many animals, including a python snake.

Weather and clothing

It will be very hot in the jungle, but there will also be a lot of mosquitoes. So keep both in mind.
